AMERICAN APPAREL
The marketing of American Apparel is unbelievably misogynistic, and not wholesome in the slightest. Is this ad serious? I didn't realize how soft core porn American Aparel was until I just googled it. Basically every company has a human representation of their product, Nike has the athlete, Macbeth has the punk-rocker, American Apparel has the half naked adolescent who may or may not have an eating disorder and their models all have droopy drugged up looking eyelids. This image and what it represents is what is wrong with our gender structure in North America. This picture is in no way empowering to the adolescent, it is kind of hypocritical American Apparel would do this, I mean they are supposed to look out for people abused by western power structures. They rely heavily on the perception that they are an ethical and socially responsible company which at some points overshadows the controversial aspects. Ethics is central to their production and not their promotion. I’m going to be bold and simply state that American Apparel is Not Fair Trade, sure their shirts are made in America but they go against everything the fair trade movement is trying to promote– giving people a voice once silenced by corporations.

Sascha Grey (the girl in the picture) is an amateur porn-star and independant individual who speaks public about Nietzsche, Brecht and woman liberation. She does not have an eating-disorder. And of course American Apparel is not ethical in anyway, they are in it for the money. There is no such thing as an ethical international corporation, only marketing strategy.
I apologize for my english, Jan from Denmark.
I doubt this is a real AA ad, but a carefully crafted prank. Or it could be. I wouldn't put it past them. They are a little too kiddy-porn-style for my tastes.
You know calling every thin girl you see an "eating disorder" person is just every bit as offensive, intrusive, and prejudgemental as calling someone fat. When we ruled out the word "fat" from polite conversation we inadvertently sanctioned "thin hate". Every fat woman at the diner feels perfectly comfortable telling me I shouldn't drink diet coke, while she ladles ranch on her plate.
Nudity in ads doesn't bother me at all, but American Apparel has a druggy/teen/preteen porn look. One bus bench ad in LA was an obviously young girl's mouth with the photographer's thumb in it.
The girl above doesn't look to bad, but if you look at the trend of their ads you see something more.
AA ads remind me of the short lived Bruce Weber (?) Calvin Kline ad's that were inspired by youth porn. You are the first person I have heard make this connection to AA, something I have thought for some time; subtly sleazy,an under current of porn culture. I like your 'detournment'. Good eye!

please read this if you want to know what (or who) is behind these ads...
